If countryside chic is your thing I recommend you escape to the Surrey Hills, encased in natural beauty and stow yourselves away for the night in this cosy Country Inn retreat!

The place:

This weekend we wined, dined and retreated to this unassuming pub with rooms and restaurant; the Bel and Dragon in Churt, Surrey.

Best described as a gastro pub with 14 generously renovated rooms, with special touches such as the bottle of Sipsmith sloe gin or damson vodka that comes complimentary in every room!

The dining room and bar are cosy, and mismatched. With a crackling fireplace and the dining room kitted out with factory-style lights and chapel chairs dotted amongst and in-between heavily patterned arm-chairs. Rustic charm at its best.

The Room:

We were placed into a room which went by the name of 'Bennett', to which the receptionist claimed to be the 'best room' on offer.

This room clearly has the wow factor over the rest, with it's narnia-style feature wardrobe, which houses and leads through to the luxurious bathroom, tucked away on the other side of the charming bedroom. You can see from the photos the free-standing bathtub was a object of beauty in itself.

Other special touches in the spacious bathroom included a lathering of White Company linen (the fluffiest towels) and a tasteful decoration of teal wood paneling throughout.

Our up-market room would cost you £135 for the night on a bed and breakfast board.
A welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Food:

On dining, the pink peppercorn squid (£9) was the best I've ever had. Light and fluffy in texture, with the perfect crisp crunch and a side dipping of sweet chili jam, I was suitably impressed. Bearing in mind, this gastro style pub featured a premium price, for example a starter of Scallops will set you back £14 - so you expect the flavours to match up.

And oh boy they do -- the fillet steak with thrice cooked chips (£33), was well worth it's asking price. Cooked perfectly to my liking, medium rare and full of juicy, flavoursome goodness and washed down with a few mojito's - I was impressed.

The meal was tasty and the place full of atmospheric buzz - even for somewhere unassuming in the middle of nowhere.

All in all a good evening, rounded off with an espresso martini (£9) we quietly strolled off to bed.

When breakfast dawned, I was suitably full from my indulge the night before, so a simple 'boiled egg and soliders' jumped out to me; personally my favourite comfort food, and often overlooked as a menu option at breakfast. The eggs ran a oozy, bold orange -- a pleasant reminder of the countryside's close proximity and organic produce.
