Food & Travel: Scrummy Sunday Lunch At The Crown, Woodbridge
I was contacted by the marketing folk behind Choose Woodbridge, a place where savvy locals come together to promote the beautiful seaside town of Woodbridge and its surrounding areas.
We had previously stumbled upon Woodbridge when staying in Suffolk for a friend's wedding, so was very keen to go back and explore tasty food on offer within the area.
The Crown in Woodbridge, not only is an award-winning restaurant with a nautical themed bar, complete with a hanging boat; but offers a boutique hotel experience too! It's located at the top of the Thoroughfare.
The restaurant interior was bright, modern and spacious and we had a lovely little spot by the window; ideal to shamelessly people watch. As it was Sunday, we couldn't not try the obligatory roast.
Lunch was offered on a two or three course basis, however, we did feel a little greedy as we had only filled our bellies a couple of hours before with a big hotel breakfast in Lavenham.
Keen to sample both starters and desserts; we came up with the 'deviously greed plan' to share both a starter and dessert, meaning we could sample the best of both sweet and savoury worlds - viola!
(Please don't judge us!)
To start; a warm blue cheese twice-baked souffle, garnished with pickled pear and a walnut salad and jazzed up with a 'typically Suffolk' garnish; aspall cyder caramel. Not only did it look fabulous, the bold cheese was perfectly complimented by the fruity pickled pear.
The meat on the roast was the perfect pink and arrived in generous amounts! It was lovely to have cauliflower and broccoli cheese as a accompaniment to the usual roast trimmings; succulent roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, boozy gravy and soft vegetables.
To finish - my favourite! We struggled to cast a decision, but after me winning rock, paper scissors three times we settled on the vanilla cheesecake with poached strawberries, strawberry gel and a strawberry and champagne sorbet.
The was one of the best desserts I've ever had. After two courses I expected good, but not THAT good! Every component of the pudding was equally balanced and complimented the other. The poached and candid dried strawberries were delicious too.
After a further snoop on the website, I've come to the conclusion I'd definitely love to come back here and stay in the boutique hotel rooms; there's a fab 'Royalty one night break' offer which oozes luxury and pampering. Just my style!
If your local or just looking for an excuse to have a 'staycation' - I recommend you go here.
